Chapter Four

WREN

Rock stars, their fantasies, and all their cheap talk…

I’m thinking about everything Corbin said as I set the last vase of flowers in a cardboard box, ready to load it into my SUV with the rest of them. While I’m flattered that Corbin wants to get back together, the whole idea seems impractical and implausible.

I mean, come on—our lives are vastly different. I get up at dawn to tend to my animals and see to the farm. When I’m rolling out of bed, Corbin is probably crashing in his hotel suite, snuggling next to whichever groupie caught his eye that night.

Besides, I can’t imagine that Corbin—a man who was once on a magazine cover for being that year’s “sexiest guy alive”—would be turned on by my body. I’ve got stretch marks, my breasts are starting to sag, and I’ve put on more than a few extra pounds in the last twenty years.

Nope. It’s never going to work between us.

I heft the box of flowers in my arms and head outside to my car. I barely make it out of the venue when Corbin comes up behind me, swooping in to take the box from my hands.

“Allow me,” he says. “Where are we taking this?”

“To my SUV. The one loaded with flower arrangements.” I point out the vehicle, which has white decals of hopping goats on the sides and back, along with my logo for the yoga studio. The studio’s logo was designed by a friend of mine back in the day, using five-year-old Quinn as the model and one of my favorite goats, Pranky. I loved that goat almost as much as I love Quinn. Quinn and I cried for days when we had to put him down last year. We even gave Pranky a funeral. All my yoga students came, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the barn.

“On it,” Corbin says.

We walk in silence to my vehicle, and I open the hatch for him. Corbin can barely squeeze the box into the back, since it’s so crowded with floral arrangements.

“Where are you bringing all these?” Corbin asks.

“My house, for now. But I’m going to give as many as I can away to my yoga students this week.”

Corbin nods. “I’ll come with you to the house. Help you unload them.”

Before I can protest, he’s walking over to the driver’s side and opening the door for me.

“Thanks,” I say, surprised at the gesture. I get in, then watch as Corbin walks around and gets into the passenger seat.

“Before we go to your house, though,” Corbin says as I start the engine, “there’s something I want to show you, Wren.”

“Something as in…?”

“I’ll guide you.”

Corbin seems…well, nervous, which surprises me. How can a guy who sings to the masses, appears on television, and is constantly hounded for autographs be anxious?

I start to drive, making the turns that Corbin tells me to make. The roads are dark now, and the stars are out.

“Last turn,” Corbin says, pointing.

My eyebrows raise. “You sure? That’s where Mercy Ranch is.
